Some Words on Roger Ebert

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with movies. This was due, in part, to being raised by a pair of parents who enjoyed films (and more specifically, genre films like sci-fi) more than the average couple. We rented everything and we saw everything. At least it felt that way. Or maybe it was easier then.

This is OLYMPUS!!!

Last weekend I saw Olympus Has Fallen. I didn’t plan to see Olympus Has Fallen. I wasn’t anticipating its release. What happened was it was Saturday. Someone said, Olympus Has Fallen came out yesterday, are you going to see it? I thought, no. But then I thought, why not. Could be fun. It seemed like an Under Siege movie. I liked Under Siege. What’s not to like about Under Siege?

Book Review: The Hobbit

I have owned a flimsy paperback edition of The Hobbit since i was in junior high. On the cover is an artist’s rendering of Bilbo Baggins and Gollum. Bilbo is portly and Gollum looks demonic and demented, even more than his film recreation. Growing up, I opened the book a few times thinking that I would read it, but I never did. I’m pretty sure that, in flipping through its pages, I came across all of those bloody songs - they are always breaking out into songs - and I was turned off. What young boy wants to read a book with songs?

Wednesday Morning Quarter-Baking

I was in Vancouver this weekend and just couldn’t bring myself to sit in my hotel room and knock out an MMQB (or an MTT or anything else). But in my mind I had real quarter-baked thoughts. More than one, too.

I could have slow-played them and stretched a few weeks out of them, but I need to properly atone, mea culpa.

When I was a child, we owned a Fisher Price record player very much like the one pictured above. It was made out of plastic, but there must have been some internal amp or speaker component because it did not need to be connected to a receiver or any external speakers. You plugged it in and it played.
