FILM DISTILLED: Gladiator
Gladiator is always on a bunch of lists of movies that never should have won the Oscar for Best Picture, like its name was Crash or something. Bullshit. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe pulled off one of the best sword-and-sandal movies of all time. Since it’s success, plenty of period epics have come and gone… but we have not been as entertained.

Movie Trailer Tuesday: Lincoln, 42, Stand Up Guys

This Tuesday morning, get away from last night’s NFL debacle. Stop thinking about the god-awful replacement refs and what scumbags Roger Goodell and the NFL owners who pull his strings are and just sit back, relax, mix yourself a drink, maybe put an umbrella in the drink, maybe an ice cube or two (if that’s your thing), shake it perhaps, stir, don’t stir… you get the idea. Because you deserve better. You deserve a little break from the hard First World realities of life. These are the trailers you deserve, if not the ones you need right now.

Lincoln

Dre: This looks like the unofficial sequel to Amistad and that might prove to be a good thing.

Les’ Locks: Week 1 Recap

By Dre Rivas

Last week Goodman called up our buddy Les and asked him what he thought about last week’s games. Let’s see how he did.

BOOM! - Premium Rush
Premium Rush - an entertaining, if forgettable little thriller - was so ripe for some BOOM! treatment, I can’t believe we waited two weeks after its release to do it. But here it is nonetheless.
BOOM! or Based On Other Movies is a new series of movie mashups that help the viewer see just how uncreative Hollywood can be sometimes. Each graphic will detail the ingredients that make up the totally unoriginal film we will all eventually enjoy anyway.

Go West, Young Man

By Dre Rivas

I own a couple of external hard drives. One of them I’ve had for years. It holds about 700 gigs worth of precious stuff [Ed. note: so, porn and…porn, got it]. I bought the drive and casing separate because it’s cheaper that way. At the time I think I invested 250 bucks for the entire thing. That feels like ages ago. It’s a solid piece of equipment, though. I’ve done a fair amount of traveling the last few years, breaking down my hardware, reconnecting it all back up. It’s traveled well. It needed to.

FILM DISTILLED: The Green Mile
We were very sad to hear about Michael Clarke Duncan’s passing this week. If he knocked one role out of the park, it was John Coffey in Frank Darabont’s faithful, emotional adaptation of Stephen King’s The Green Mile.

League Auditions: The Brooklyn Nets

By Dre Rivas

Dre Rivas is a Knick fan just looking for another team to follow; a team that will act as a refuge from all the negativity the James Dolan era has inflicted upon the Knick fan base - a distraction, if you will, from the constant reminder of what this New York Knicks team could have been, and what it actually is.

I’m a Yankee fan. And for many Yankee fans, it means you grow up hating the Mets. When I lived in the Bronx, the Mets were the enemy. And the Mets were good. They had Doc Gooden. And Daryl Strawberry. And they hadn’t thrown away their careers yet. They won a World Series, which was pretty awful. But it could have been worse; it could have been three.

I Wanna Be Like Mike (from Breaking Bad)

Here at the Op, we always give credit where credit is due. If we get an idea from somewhere else, we give them a shout-out. If we do it on our own, that’s cool, too.

That being said, you all know how much we (Dre and I) like Breaking Bad. I’ll give Dre the credit, he came to the show first. I’ve never been much of an early adopter. I’m still waiting to watch The Wire and maybe one day I’ll get to that. But there’s a long line of things I need to do that I’ve put off and The Wire will just have to wait its turn.

FILM DISTILLED: Predator
When Dillon and Dutch meet for the first time in a long time, they engage in one of the most awesomely awkward handshakes-turned-air-arm-wrestles ever. There are few better action films than John McTiernan’s Predator. And Arnold was never better.

Movie Trailer Tuesday: Silver Lining’s Playbook, The Impossible

You can count on us. Days, weeks, months and years pass by and what do you have to rely on? Family? Maybe. Rising prices? Sure. Movie Trailer Tuesday? Absolutely.

Here are two trailers for your Tuesday viewing pleasure.

Silver Lining’s Playbook:

J. Goodman: This movie title annoys me. It really bothers me. It screams pretentious. It’s so bad, Nicholas Sparks thought it was hackneyed. This script annoys me. Robert De Niro in these roles annoys me. That being said, can’t wait to see it.

FILM DISTILLED: Scent of a Woman
I’m not sure how one of my favorite films of all time ended up looking like this. But here it is, pure as snow. Or a Tony Montana line of coke, take your pick.

Movie Trailer Tuesday: The Last Stand, Bullet to the Head, The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

Hey, MTT-ers, we’re back! This Tuesday, we’re featuring solo movies from basically everyone who is in The Expendables 2. It’s very coincidental. We didn’t plan this. It’s sort of how the Wu-Tang Clan would drop an ensemble album and then everyone went and did a solo project, only if the Wu-Tang Clan hadn’t been relevant for 20 years before they regurgitated the same formula.

The Last Stand:

J. Goodman: Am I glad that Arnold’s back? Definitely. Does this look good? Definitely not.

BOOM! - The Bourne Legacy
I enjoyed The Bourne Legacy (despite the damaging fact that there is no ending of any sort) quite a bit but it was clear the film was manufactured with some very easy-to-find ingredients. That’s where Fully Operational comes in.

Don’t Call It a Comeback 13: Notes From a Last Place (Fantasy) Team

By Dre Rivas

They say all good things must come to an end. Sometimes we don’t get to decide how. That’s just life. You’re born, you’ll die. A sun rises and then sets. All good things. Like HBO’s Deadwood.  A beautiful sentence. Your best date. A greatest baseball game you saw this season. Crowds come and they go. All that’s left is an empty stadium. They all come to an end, these things. Anyway, that’s what they say.
